PTO Volunteer Opportunities

We are currently seeking nominations for the PTO officer positions of president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary for the 2019-2020 school year. Elections will be held at our meeting April 16 at 6pm. Officers, Teacher Representatives, and Grade Level Reps make up the PTO Executive Board. The duties of the Executive Board include creating standing rules and policies, creating committees, preparing and submitting a budget to the membership, and preparing reports and recommendations to the membership. Descriptions of the positions are below:

President - Responsibilities: Lead monthly meetings, serve as primary contact for the principal; work with executive board and school administration to create meeting agendas; act as a representative of the organizations to the community; coordinate the work of the committees to ensure that the purpose of the organization is served.

Vice-President - Responsibilities: Assist the president, carry out the president’s responsibilities when he/she is absent.

Treasurer - Responsibilities: Keep accurate records of the receipts and expenditures, receive and pay out all funds in accordance with the approval of the executive board, present financial statements at meetings and as requested by the executive board, prepare and present a full report at the end of each year.

Secretary - Responsibilities: Work with president and executive board to create monthly agenda, record meeting minutes, coordinate communication and notices and meetings to parents and teachers, keep a list of meeting attendees, keep records for the organization, keep copies of the minutes, agendas, bylaws, and any other necessary documents and supplies.

Grade Level Representatives - Responsibilities: Attend PTO Meetings; develop committees and lead or participate in committee work; develop the budget; help shape the direction of the organization; facilitate communication between the organization and the parents and teachers in each grade level. Two representatives per grade level are needed.

Teacher Representatives- Responsibilities: Attend PTO Meetings; develop the budget; help shape the direction of the organization; facilitate communication between the organization and teachers, participate in committees.

If you would like to help in other ways, volunteers are also needed for a variety of school efforts including:

District Advisory Representative: Attend DAC and PTO Meetings, represent FLA families and their needs to KCPS Board of Education and share district news with FLA families.

Room Parents - Serve as a room parents and help recruit others to assist with classroom/teacher needs; plan seasonal room parties; chaperone field trips, updating bulletin boards and making copies.

Parent Education & Family Support: Plan educational workshops for parents; organize Nurse’s closet, uniform donations & sale, identify & assist with other parent needs

Community Building:  Welcome parents at Kindergarten Boo Hoo Breakfast; plan school social events; represent the PTO at welcome tables during school events; assist in student recruitment efforts by attending school fairs & networking; reach out to FLA families to help PTO understand their needs, and promote their involvement; help provide or recruit volunteers to aid in translation during meetings and of print/online materials.

Auditing - Provide annual review of the PTO finances.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation - Organize teacher/staff luncheons during parent/conference days. Coordinate volunteers to assist with Teacher Appreciation Week and other appreciation efforts.

Grounds - Organize and assist with efforts to clean up and enhance the schoolbuilding grounds; planting trees & flowers and other projects as needed.

Book Fair - Organize or assist with annual book fairs; recruit volunteers to help, communicate with Scholastic to reserve materials, set up times for teachers to bring classes; distribute information to students and families to promote the fair.

Communications: Help share news to the school community through emails, blog posts, social media, bulletin boards and newsletters.

Fall Carnival - Plan, promote, recruit volunteers, and assist with the annual Carnival; includes decorations, games, prizes, refreshments, and inflatables.

Pedestrian Safety: Assist with improving and maintaining safe school arrival and dismissal procedures.

Fundraising - Lead or assist in fundraising efforts including Box Tops, Book Fair, Carnival, Restaurant Nights.

Anti-bullying - Work with other parents to develop programs to share information with our school community about the effects of bullying, how to prevent it, and how to address it.
