Attn FLA Middle School Parents!

FLA Middle School parents –

There are two upcoming events that may be of interest to you.

We are looking for a committee of parents to help Dr. Sly plan a Middle School Open House on 1/21/16.  If you are interested in sharing how wonderful our program has become, please contact Julie Valdivia at Julie.Valdivia@hallmark.com or Dr. Sly at ksly@kcpublicschools.org so we can add you to committee list.  We will have our first meeting immediately following the next FLA PTO meeting on Thursday, Dec. 17th from 6-7pm.  Hope to see you there!

This Friday 12/18, the Middle School teachers have developed a fun afternoon of activities before winter break.  They could use some parent involvement with the following:

1.       STUCO would like to have 2-3 “carnival-like” games in the large area on the 3rd floor.  The teachers will all be pretty busy in rooms, so if you can help supervise & run these games from 2 – 3:30 it would be greatly appreciated!

2.       Several teachers will be hosting fun activities in their classrooms.  Below is a supply list that is needed for these activities.  If you can help with donations, please contact the teacher(s) listed for any questions you may have.  Please have supplies to them no later than Wednesday 12/16 so they will know what they are missing and can plan accordingly.

Ms. Vargas/Ms. Bock: Piñata Room

  • News paper
  • Glue
  • Balloons
  • Tissue paper (sorted colors)
  • Two bag of candies

Ms. Haywood: Arts/Crafts (Ornaments) Room

  • Clear spheres that open
  • Crayons

Ms. Talboy/Dr. Sly: Gingerbread Room

  • Peppermints
  • Andy's Candy Mints (great doors)
  • Necco Wafers
  • Marshmallows - large white and pink/green holiday ones
  • Twizzlers
  • M&Ms - holiday and regular colors
  • Mike & Ike's holiday
  • gumdrops
  • gumdrop rings (make great wreaths)
  • Junior Mints
  • Candy canes - we had large ones but you could use either large or small or both
  • Square pretzels (make great windows)

Pizza Hut Book It Program

Our Librarian, Ms. Frantz wants to remind families that we recently started an all school reading incentive called Pizza Hut Book It Reading Program.  We want all our scholars to check out books and read their hearts out.  For Kindergarten through 5th grades, please make sure your child has turned in a signed permission slip giving them permission to check out books.  There are extra forms in the library if you need a new one.  Middle school students should return the signed Student Handbook and Conduct Form to the office that states that they are responsible for school property and books.  Also, remember to return the library books weekly so that you may check out new ones.  If you lose or damage a book, please report it immediately to the library.  The cost to replace the book will be applied to your student’s account.  No additional books will be checked out until the account has been settled.  Please feel free to call Ms. Frantz after 2:30 p.m. if you have any questions at 816-418-6037.

There are several ways to keep up to date on what is happening at FLA.
  • Sign up for FLAShines to receive email announcements.  Go to FLA E-news to register.
  • Make sure the school has your updated phone number to receive announcements through the automated School Reach phone notification system.  Call FLA at 816-418-6000 if you have a new number.

Fundraisers

FLA has many fundraisers throughout the year.  Because we know every family is different, we try to offer different ways to help.  Families do not need to contribute to every fundraiser, but we hope one or more of these will work for you.

Dress down for $1 Day - many Fridays throughout the year are free dress days, when students may come out of uniform if they bring $1 to class.

Box Tops - cut out and collect Box Tops from participating products and bring them to school.  Each Box Top counts for 10¢ to the school.  Learn more at this link: Box Tops for Education.

Fall Carnival - buy tickets for games and raise money for the school.  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year!

Book Fair - discounted Scholastic books, posters and other items are available for sale in La Plaza.  This usually happens once or twice per year.

Target Red Cards - if you have a Target credit card, you can request that a percentage of your spending be sent to a school through their Take Charge of Education program. Be sure to pick FLA as your school of choice.

Family Dinners - Buy your family dinner during one of our Math, Language, or Art events throughout the year and raise money for the school.

World Culture Celebration Raffle - Donate or help solicit items to use in the raffle, then buy raffle tickets for a chance to win big.

Square 1 Art - purchase your student's artwork printed on a variety of objects like t-shirts, trivets, wall art, magnets or bookmarks.

POW! Store donations - Throughout the year, students receive POW! cards from their teachers for showing great behavior at school.  Students can redeem these cards to buy trinkets, toys, candy, posters and other fun items.  Donations to the store of gently used (but clean) toys, snacks, or discounted items may be dropped off at the office for Vice Principals Ms. Debra Lainez and Dr. Krista Sly.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways parents can help at Foreign Language Academy.  Below is a list of some of the opportunities available.

Room Parents - Help coordinate the parents in your child's classroom to put together seasonal parties - Fall, Winter, and Friendship.  You will send home a letter (see sample) asking parents if they can help with a donation of food, drink, or party supplies, and to ask if the parent can attend and help during the party. Many parents and teachers also work together to plan games, crafts or other activities during the party.

Fall Carnival - Many parents are needed to work a shift at one of the games or stations during the carnival.

Book Fair - Many parents are needed to work a shift during the week long book fairs.  These are fundraisers for the school and a great way to get books into the homes of our students.

Special Events - Help set up and organize events like the Black History Program, World Culture Celebration, and Field Day.

Volunteer in the classroom or in the office - Parents who wish to volunteer in the building, outside of our seasonal parties, must complete the volunteer application process through KCPS, and have a background check.  Once you are approved, you may coordinate with your child's teacher or the office to come and volunteer when it is convenient for the teacher and you.  More information can be found at this link: KCPS Volunteer Opportunities
